[Updated] NEED HELP: HDD Issue [Resolved] Empty [Updated] NEED HELP: HDD Issue [Resolved]

[Issue resolved. See updates below.]

I haven't played the SOCOM II HDD maps since late 2005 and I've been dying to play them again. But I'm having an "issue."

Here's the scoop...

Today I received a 40gb Sony HDD in the mail from a friend. It is already formatted and the HDD maps are already installed. That being the case, I figured that all I needed to do was hook the HDD to my network adapter, put in the SOCOM II disk, go to OPTIONS, and click on ENABLE HDD. Well, I did that. But then I got a message saying the HDD "is not correctly installed ..."
scratch
Here are the vital facts...

--- PS2 Model: SCPH-39001
--- Sony HDD Model: SCPH-20401
--- The ethernet part of my network adapter works; I play online every day
--- I tried all jumper settings, even no jumpers at all
--- I borrowed a neighbor's network adapter; it still wouldn't install
--- I tried it on neighbor's PS2 with his adapter; no luck
--- I tried it on neighbor's PS2 with my adapter; no luck
--- I tried a Maxtor HDD, going through above scenarios; no luck
--- The HDD worked in my friend's PS2 before he shipped it
--- I have ruled out physical damage; the HDD was shipped in an anti-static bag, then taped up, then wrapped in multiple layers of clean cloth, then taped up, then placed inside a small cardboard box, then taped up, then snugly encased in 2 inches of hard foam inside another cardboard box (lol!)

I'm thinking the HDD-reading (IDE) part of my PS2's network adapter is fried. But if that's the case, then my neighbor's adapter is thus fried too.

Is anyone familiar with this issue? Do you know someone who is? Any tip would be much appreciated.

get a bc ps3, then get combined assault
download all the map packs. after hours last bastion and liberation are on it, the maps are free,
I dont know what else to tell you,
I am going to try to dig up those old demo discs that have the 3 maps on them because I would like to have those maps on socom 2 on my ps3, but right now I have to play those maps on combined assault,
it is EXTREMELY HARD to get a decent sized group on those maps on s2 nowdays anyway, combined assault might be the only way to get a full room if you want to play those maps.
sad but thats the facts, as far as I have experienced

***UPDATE***

I was wrong.

My friend just reminded me that he recently erased the maps from the HDD and loaded an operating system onto it. (I had a strong feeling that it was unlikely that both mine and my neighbor's network adapters were faulty.) This is something he told me a couple weeks ago, but I forgot it. Anyway, the HDD did have the maps and was being used at one time, so...

It appears that all I have to do now is:

1. Clean the lens of the laser/reader in my PS2 so it will read the blue-surface Utility Disc. I may have to "calibrate" it. (Yikes!)

2. Format the HDD with the Sony Utility Disc.

3. Install the maps onto the HDD.

4. Go to the S2 OPTIONS menu and enable the HDD.

Easy enough, eh? Man, I hope so. confused

Sincere apologies to those who suffered through my original post.

Thanks, man. I hear ya. You're right about the scarcity of HDD players on S2. So far, I know only 6 or 7. I might play the HDD maps on S3 or CA again, but it's just a far cry from the S2 experience. I am addicted to the "three F's" of SOCOM: feel, function, form, feel, fire-rate, freedom, feel, and, oh, wait a minute... Laughing

***UPDATE II***

I did it!

I may have lost a couple hours of sleep, but it was WELL WORTH IT. I can hardly wait to play some Last Bastion.

Turns out, I only had to clean the laser lens.

BTW, steps 3 and 4 above are reversed. For future reference, it went like this:

1. Clean the laser lens (only if your PS2 won't read the HDD Utility Disc).
2. Format the HDD with the Sony HDD Utility Disc.
3. Go to the SOCOM II OPTIONS menu and enable the HDD.
4. Install the maps onto the HDD.

The lens cleaning part is so easy. It's amazing how a tiny amount of dust can make such a huge impact.

I hope this thread helps my fellow SOCRACK addicts.
